fire and child saftey

as we are all aware its National Kidsafe Day, happening across Australia this October 23.
National Kidsafe Day is a great opportunity for us all to reflect on how we each can contribute to making the world a safer place for all kids. This  story is my contribution.
when my daughter was 2 1/2 we decided to go camping with her and her baby brother Brent he was 5 months old so we waited till boxing day due to traffic its safer for the kids so we packed the car boxing day morning and head off. we camped at howqua valley in Victoria we pitched our tents and we collected wood and got the camp ready for dark Rodney went to the howqua valley caravan park to get clean fresh water in the drums for the kids to drink and wash dishes ect. we camped down and had a great couple of days then decided we would head back new years day as the roads will be quite and safer for the 2 hour drive home.we had rods brother join us for the last couple of days who has no children.he had camped next to us to be close to the children.that night we had a b.b.q for dinner and watched the kids like hawks telling them fire burns get back don't touch we were broken records.making sure the kids were not burnt buy the open fire the b.b.q sat over the edge of.my Rodney had made this. warren Rodney's brother had a roast in a camp oven which requires you to dig a whole and fill it half way and you have hot burning coals which heat the oven and cook the meals with hot coals on top well tea went great.we all ended the night happy and tired.in the morning i had gotten up started the fire and stocked it up for the BBQ so we could have bacon and eggs.in the mean time i went to get a bottle from the  sterilizer for Brent  when I heard a scream that still gives me shivers today.my little girl had wondered over to her uncles camp site and was looking around we she had stepped into the camp pit.the bottom still had hot coals in it from the night before. Jessica was wearing PVC sandals which semi melted from the coals but also helped to save her foot. as i ran to see what was wrong she lay'd down with her foot in the air.her uncle was there at this time he yelled i don't see what's wrong I replied she was bitten by a bull ant.the next thing he was screaming she has been burnt.well i nearly dropped my son. i lay him in the port a cot and ran to aid her.warren and i were in shock and frantic as his girlfriend tried to give burn cream to me.she was burnt beyond the aid of cream i ran to the tree and had Rodney cut the 20 ltr drum down as we poured it on to her leg and got fresh towels to wet and wrap her with.we Transferd her to the car and rushed her to Mansfield hospital who rushed her to the royal children's hospital in Melbourne. Jessica went through nearly two years of treatment before she cold use her leg and foot again.she is fully recovered now and you can barely notice any scars.and she has no memory at all.mine although is still very clear of the event and the things we should have know and thought about to keep her safer.we all learned a lesson and i followed on to do a burns course and basic first aid. i also learnt that an accident will happen at anytime with anything you least expect  we were lucky so fire safety and first aid is a must for children as they can be burnt grabbing the kettle or a hot coffee  a pot on the stove do you know what to do?a first aid course can save your babies life. St john's ambulance offers these courses give it a go you wont regret it.it just might save yours or a friends child's life or that of a stranger in need of aid.
